What I collect

  • Your email address and zip code when you sign up, plus when and how you signed up (for example, from a neighbor's link).
  • Whether each email was delivered, opened, or bounced, and which links you clicked. Opens aren't very reliable, so I mostly look at clicks.
  • Referrals: if a neighbor signs up with your share link, I note that it came from you.
  • If you use Tell Birdie: what you wrote, the town, and any link or email you chose to add.
  • To stop spam, I briefly keep a scrambled code made from the internet address a signup, tip, or page visit came from. I never keep the address itself. It's deleted within a day, usually within an hour.

Why

To send you Birdie for your area, and to learn which stories are useful so Birdie gets better.

What I don't do

I never sell your information or share it with advertisers. Two service providers handle it only to run Birdie: an email service (Resend) that delivers the emails, and a hosting provider that stores the site's data.

Cookies

Birdie itself doesn't set cookies or store anything in your browser. The hosting provider sets one short-lived security cookie that helps block bots.

Unsubscribing and deleting your data

Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Click it, confirm, and you're off the list. To see, correct, or delete what I have about you, send a note through Tell Birdie with the email address you signed up with, or write to the address below.

Children

Birdie is written for adults and isn't meant for children under 13.

Changes

If this page changes, I'll update the date at the top and note it in the newsletter.
